Scenario One
Computer software training is designed in a traditional instructor talks, trainees watch, instructor talks more, trainees watches more, instructor talks still more, trainees check email. At the end of the module, trainees get two minutes to practice. Instructor interrupts practice to talk even more. Trainees leave the session with a workbook never referred to that sits on a shelf but is never used. Trainees learn software on the job.
Scenario Two
Orientation program features mandatory, boring, PowerPoint talking points supplied by corporate. Trainees fall asleep during the presentation, making their entry into the organization as exciting as watching turtles walk. Trainees never absorb the corporate points. When corporate visits the site, Training is criticized for not teaching the message.
Scenario Three
The trainers that present the first, general knowledge days are upbeat, festive and fun-filled. The trainees have such a good time in training that, when they begin their on-the-job training, they are disappointed by how hard, dirty and exhausting the work really is. The trainees, disillusioned, quit within three months, wasting days of training dollars.
